Tata Punch EV vs Petrol Variant – Key Differences

The Tata Punch is a micro-SUV from Tata Motors that has gained immense popularity since its launch. The micro-SUV caught the eye right from its announcement. The advanced features, comfort amenities, and safety offerings all contributed to its popularity. It can be said that the Tata Punch packs a punch. The competitive price tag is an added benefit.

Building on the success of the Punch and matching the growing consumer demand for an eco-friendly commute, Tata Motors introduced the Tata Punch EV, an EV version of the ICE model. While it builds on the iconic elements of the Punch, there are certain changes that add to its futuristic EV appeal. But what are these differences? Keep reading to find out.

What’s Under the Hood?

The first and most obvious difference between the two cars is the powertrain. The Tata Punch is an ICE car with a petrol and CNG engine on offer. It has a 1.2-litre Revotron engine offering a power of 87bhp@6000rpm and a torque of 115Nm@3150-3350rpm. The 1199 cc engine comes with 5-speed manual and 5-speed AMT gearbox options. The CNG engine offers a power of 72bhp@6000rpm and a torque of 103Nm@3250rpm. It only gets the 5-speed manual gearbox. The petrol variants offer a mileage of 18.8 km/l to 20.9 km/l. The CNG variants offer a mileage of 26.99 km/kg.

The Punch EV comes with two battery pack options. The 25 kWh battery generates 80.46 bhp and torque of 114 Nm. Its range is 265 km. The bigger 35 kWh battery produces 120.69 bhp and torque of 190 Nm. It offers an impressive range of 365 km.

Both versions of the Punch come with MacPherson strut suspension in the front and Rear twist beam suspension at the back. This ensures an agile and stable ride quality. The range and mileage figures make both the EV and ICE Punch suitable for city rides and long drives.

The Dimensional Difference

Another difference is the dimensions. The Punch EV has a length of 3857 mm, a width of 1742 mm, a height of 1633 mm, and a wheelbase of 2445 mm. The  Punch is slightly shorter in length at 3827 mm. While the width is the same, the height is also shorter at 1615 mm. The wheelbase is the same, ensuring ample legroom and knee room for front and rear passengers in both cars. The seating capacity is five in both.

The Punch EV has a ground clearance of 190 mm, while the Punch has a ground clearance of 187 mm. While there is a difference, it is quite minimal, ensuring both cars can take on diverse terrains and off-road excursions with ease. But in case of obstacles and potholes, sometimes, the 3 mm can matter.

Comfort and Entertainment Features

There are minor yet noticeable differences in the comfort and entertainment amenities. To begin with, the Punch EV comes with an 8-way manually adjustable driver’s seat, while the Punch gets a 6-way manually adjustable system. The two-way manually adjustable rear seat option of the Punch EV is absent in the Punch. The Punch EV also gets an automatic climate control system, similar to the Punch ICE.

  • Remote Car Lock/Unlock via App
  • Car Light Flashing & Honking via App
  • Remote Car Start/Stop

Safety Features: Airbags & More

The Tata Punch has two airbags, fewer than the six standard airbags present across the variants of the Punch EV. Both SUVs hold a 5-star safety rating. The Punch also does not get the 360-degree camera, Hill Assist, and Hill Descent Control features of the Punch EV.

The Price Aspect

Pricing is another major difference between the two cars. The Tata Punch EV comes at an on-road Delhi price range of ₹10.60 lakhs to ₹15. 33 lakhs. It has a total of twenty variants. The Tata Punch comes at a much lower price range of ₹6.71 lakhs to ₹12 lakhs (on-road price in Delhi). It has 53 variants. While the initial cost of the Punch EV is high, running costs are lower than those of the ICE variants.

Final Words

The Tata Punch and the Tata Punch EV are both powerful micro-SUVs in their own way. Each comes with a range of overlapping and unique comfort, entertainment, and safety features. The ultimate choice between the two depends on your budget, driving style, and preference. Compare features and assess your needs to make the right pick.
